The Postage Stamp came into being in the winter of 1909-10. Later in 1910, in a Scotland versus England match, the famous quartet of James Braid, Sandy Herd, J.H. Taylor and Harry Vardon failed to master the hole, but immediately wrote a letter of unanimous approval. This famous hole, with a view of the beautiful Isle of Arran in the distance, is the shortest of all holes of the Open Championship Courses, and has withstood the rigors of six "Opens": 1923, 1950, 1962, 1973, 1982 and 1989. In the first round of the 1973 Open Championship, Gene Sarazen holed in one and followed with a two in the second round.
